Tips for Blowout Protector

At any oil and gas site, blowout protector always plays an important role. Because it's responsible for the safety of everyone on site, as well as a lot of high-valued machinery.

The blowout protector is a fairly large valve which is sited on top of a well, and it is generally used to close down the well in the event that the drilling crew for some reason loses control of well fluids. When the BOP is closed down by remotely operated hydraulic actuators, the drilling crew could reassert control over the emergency appeared in the reservoir.

Proper installation and testing of blowout preventer equipment is essential to ensuring that it can be worked well when the emergency happened.

BOP's Installation

When installing the BOP, ensure the flange rings and grooves are clean and in good condition. Flange bolts and nuts should also be clean and they should be tightened to the proper torque. Flange bolts and nuts should be retightened every two to three weeks. Care should be taken when hooking up hydraulic lines from the closing unit to the preventers to be certain each valve operates the proper preventer. Closing unit valves should be clearly labeled. Manual closing wheels should be installed so the preventers can be closed in case hydraulic pressure is lost.

Common Problems

The pipe-ram BOP is above the blind-ram BOP, which is a common hidden dangerous problem in BOP’s installation.

After closing the pipe-ram BOP, there is drill string in the borehole. If the ram is stabbed and there is no way to replace it, it will cause an out-of-control blowout.

Solutions

During drilling, there are two shut-in operating modes: an empty borehole or the drill string being in the borehole. Two modes are as follows:

  1. When the borehole is empty, close the blind-ram BOP. If the pipe-ram BOP is above the blind-ram BOP, when the blind-ram BOP is stabbed, the pipe-ram BOP can be changed into a blind-ram BOP, recovering to control the wellhead.
  2. When a drill string is in the borehole, close the pipe-ram BOP. If the blind-ram BOP is above the pipe-ram BOP and the pipe-ram BOP is stabbed, the blind-ram BOP can be changed into a pipe-ram BOP, recovering to control the wellhead.

BOP's Testing

Failure to test BOP at regular intervals is very dangerous because you’ll never know whether or not the component is ready, in the event that a formation kick leads to a rupture. If one should actually happen and the BOP fails to function as intended, all kinds of catastrophic results are possible.

Considering the safety of the entire crew, as well as all the machinery at an oil or gas site, it’s necessary ask for professional team to take the regularly test of BOP's function and capabilities.
